Recently, I had the pleasure of producing a single called "Crucified" for my friend Kennedy Thorne, a songwriter who writes prolific prophetic music. We all had a blast! It was a great process, so I figured I'd break it down for you...
1. Kennedy sang the song on my voicemail.
Yes.... voicemail! Kennedy lives on the other side of the city, so it was difficult for use to get together. Nonetheless, the process worked! I understood the structure of the song based on the voicemail.
2. I created a music arrangement.
Using Kennedy's voicemail, I worked out a track that gave the feel Kennedy wanted. I did have to adjust a few things based on his feedback, but it was minor.
3. My wife, Nikeya, created a background vocal arrangement (harmonies).
Nikeya is a genius with background vocal arrangements, so I was glad she helped her man out! VERY late at night, we recorded a rough demo for the background singers to use as a guide for their session.
4. We recorded the background vocals.
This was fun.... it was awesome to get back together with some of my peeps from Living Word Christian Center worship team: Liz Crayton, Devonne Wilhoit, Derrick Lowe and Jarrell Cobb! Great people with great talent... came in and smashed the parts! And... they're also craaaaazy, so there were quite a few laughs! The session was held at Horse-Drawn Productions (Berwyn, IL).
5. I tweaked the keys on the track and recorded drums.
My bro TJ Walker came in and recorded the drums in less than an hour! I love working with this guy because he actually studies the material prior to the session! TJ always brings my tracks to life!
6. Mix and master.
I took the session to my home studio to do the mix and master. Thanks to Logic Pro X software, the mix process was flexible and dynamic. It was fun mixing those "gospel choir-style" vocals.... haven't done that in a while!
I'm proud of Kennedy for getting this song out of his head and recorded to bless others. It was an idea he presented to me last year, but he persevered and got it done! We're currently working on shipping his product, so we'll let you know when we have a release date!
